Im just getting into this game this year. And i used a respec mod on companions. Turned the tiefling rogue into a grenadier. Hes made for it. And holy bombs do around 150dmg on average a round. I just rebuild the story companions entirely with the respec mod. ALl the freedoms of testing builds, still get the dialog and stuff. I got Wenduag as a 2h reach hunter, Woljif as a nat attack vivisectionist and Ember as a standard witch at the moment for instance (since I am playing sorc myself there was a certain overload of Cha based classes).

You can respec story companions too, but to a much more limited degree. You cant change any feats or levels they have in whatever class they had when you got them. Others have pointed out the respec mod. I just wanted to add DO NOT RESPEC MERCENARIES WITH THAT MOD. It will completely break them, corrupting your safe file. Companions work fine but, at least for me, mercenaries don‘t. I wanted a mercenary with 25 point buy score but oh well.
